A Walk With George

I grew up in Southern Maryland--meaning I have always lived moments away from history my entire life.  I took things like museums and historical field trips for grantid when I was a kid--we live near D.C., that's just what we do.  I'm sure my students do the same thing--so every year when we go to Mt. Vernon, I try to at least make them think about why we go.  Today, though I was caught up in small moments.  Sure, his house is grand, his gardens are perfectly surveyed, his barn is a marvel of architecture, but what about the small things.  I took some time photographing those today while my kiddos were listening to the blacksmith talk, or while we were walking to a new building and they stopped to wave at a friend.

I just got caught in the moment of--George Washington walked where I'm walking.  Did he pay attention to the candles and locks and fenceposts? And then I wanted to pretend I was Benjamin Gates and find a secret slave passageway.  I swear they should make that part of the tour!
